Allycon: The Lost Time Travelers

An interactive live-quest with NFC crystals, holographic time portals, and embedded hardware.

For Allycon, the premier youth festival at De nieuwe bibliotheek Almere, we created a large-scale interactive time-travel quest. Children were equipped with physical rechargeable NFC crystals to hunt down stranded time travelers across the building, activate interactive actor tablets, and power up the central holographic time portal.

The Approach

We blended narrative live-action roleplay with a robust custom hardware ecosystem: laser-cut acrylic props, ESP32 microcontrollers, multi-channel NFC readers, addressable RGB LEDs, and a holographic projection portal. Every interaction—from completing a quest with an actor to inserting the crystal into the portal socket—delivered real-time dynamic audiovisual feedback.

Physical NFC Time Crystals

Tangible crystal props with built-in NFC tags that served as a personal power source and live save-state for every young time traveler.

Round Actor Tablets

Custom acrylic tablets with ESP controllers, NFC readers, and engraved era runes that illuminated live once a crystal was successfully charged.

Live Progress Readout

Placing the crystal back onto any tablet illuminated all previously unlocked symbols, giving players an instant visual readout of completed eras.

Holographic Time Portal

A spectacular physical portal featuring an integrated holographic display that told the story of the temporal anomaly and reacted to inserted crystals.

Dynamic LED Power Meter

When slotted into the portal socket, LEDs climbed progressively up the arch proportional to completed quests, accompanied by glowing era runes.

Multi-State Audio & Activation

Dynamic sound design: a brownout glitch effect when undercharged, and an explosive full-power audio/visual discharge once all missions were completed.

In-House Acrylic & ESP32 Fabrication

All sockets, tablets, and portal components were designed and crafted in-house using laser-cut acrylic and modular microcontrollers.

The Result

Hundreds of young festivalgoers immersed themselves in the time-travel narrative. The synergy of tactile interaction, glowing crystals, and the climactic portal activation created an unforgettable centerpiece at Allycon.
